Abstract
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute conducted the「Survey on Artists」to establish policy measures to support artists by examining their socioeconomic condition and awareness and state of creative activities. This survey includes artist from 10 different fields including literature, art, photography, architecture, folk music, music, theater, dance, and film and collects data on the state of their creative activities as well as awareness and attitudes. The survey was first conducted in 1988 and conducted every 3 years thereafter and this data was collected in 1997.
The questionnaire includes contents on the creative activities for the 10 artistic fields and contains questions on field of artistic activity, period of activity, reason for getting involved in this activity, and number of times published/exhibited. Questions common to all fields include level of international competitiveness of cultural/artistic activity, perception of society’s evaluation of artists, level of opportunity for presenting work, level of financial compensation for artistic activity, perception of the function of culture and the arts, obstacles to cultural and artistic activities, level of satisfaction with cultural/artistic activity, amount of activity support benefit, degree of helpfulness of artistic education, conditions for success in the field of culture and arts, weight of artistic and social value, level of satisfaction with policy on culture and the arts, and measure for improving culture and the arts. In addition questions on occupation, state of employment, degree of agreement between current occupation and major and field of activity, subjective standard of living, and monthly income and expenditure are included in order to examine the socio economic state of the artists.

「문화예술인 실태조사」는 1988년부터 2006년까지 모두 일곱 번의 조사가 수행되었으며, 현재 KOSSDA에서는 1997년(A1-1997-0016), 2000년(A1-2000-0055), 2003년(A1-2003-0085), 2006년(A1-2006-0110) 자료와 2004년(A1-2004-0084)에 실시한 특별조사 자료만 이용가능하다.
