Abstract

Our society has yet to reach a basic social consensus on a concrete action plan regarding reunification or a framework for an ideal reunified society. There is a need for a substantive and practical discussion on reunification and an urgent need for an appropriate approach and policy for achieving reunification. At a point where relations with neighboring nations have emerged as major issues due to the North Korean nuclear crisis, increase in North Korean defectors, and increase in economic exchanges between North and South Korea, the purpose of this survey is to gather baseline data for the establishment of effective reunification policies by understanding the public opinion on reunification and relations with North Korea.
This survey was conducted in 2007 and 2008 to identify the changes in people’s attitude towards reunification, and this data was collected in 2008. The questionnaire of this survey is composed of five areas including opinion on reunification, attitude towards North Korea, evaluation of policy on North Korea, attitude towards North Korean defectors, and awareness of relations with neighboring nations. Specific questions for each area are as follows.
Opinions on Reunification: the need and time for reunification, degree of contribution towards reunification by each policy on North Korea, urgency of North Korean issues, and social change following reunification.
Attitude towards North Korea: awareness of North and South Korea relations, evaluation on level of democracy in North and South Korea, level of trust in the North Korean government, North Korea’s level of change, possibility of armed provocation by North Korea, heterogeneity of North and South Korea, experience related to North Korea, and the possibility of a war on the Korean peninsula.
Evaluation of Policy on North Korea: effectiveness and appropriateness of aid to North Korea, contribution of North-South economic cooperation on North Korean reform, level of satisfaction with policy on North Korea, and the reflection of public opinion on policy on North Korea.
Attitude towards North Korean Defectors: affinity towards North Korean defectors, social distance towards North Korean defectors, and willingness to accept North Korean defectors.

In addition contents on changes in Korean society following liberation and attitude towards Korean society today.
