Abstract

Korean society has yet to reach a basic social consensus on a concrete action plan regarding reunification or a framework for an ideal reunified society. There is a need for a substantive and practical discussion on reunification and an urgent need for an appropriate approach and policy for achieving reunification. At a point where relations with neighboring nations have emerged as major issues due to the North Korean nuclear crisis, increase in North Korean defectors, and increase in economic exchanges between North and South Korea, the purpose of this survey is to gather baseline data for the establishment of effective reunification policies by understanding the public opinion on reunification and relations with North Korea.
This survey has been conducted every year since 2007 to identify the changes in people’s attitude towards reunification, and this data was collected in 2010. The questionnaire of this survey is composed of five areas including awareness of reunification, attitude towards North Korea, evaluation of policy on North Korea, attitude towards North Korean defectors, and attitude towards neighboring nations. Questions included in each area are as follows.
1. Awareness of Reunification
Need for reunification, intensity of pushing ahead with reunification, expected time of reunification, benefit of reunification, social improvement after reunification, and regime of reunified Korea, etc.
2. Attitude towards North Korea
Awareness of North Korea, level of change in North Korea, trust in the North Korean government, the North Korean government's need for reunification, intimidation of the North Korean nuclear, possibility of armed provocation by North Korea, possibility of a war on the Korean peninsula, experience related to North Korea, and heterogeneity of North and South Korea, etc.
3. Evaluation of Policy on North Korea
Contribution of exchanges between North and South Korea on reunification, prerequisite for reunification, effectiveness and appropriateness of aid to North Korea, contribution of North-South economic cooperation on North Korean reform, satisfaction with policy on North Korea, and the reflection of public opinion on policy on North Korea, etc.
4. Attitude towards North Korean Defectors
Affinity towards North Korean defectors, social distance towards North Korean defectors, willingness to accept North Korean defectors, and support level for North Korean defectors, etc.
5. Attitude towards Neighboring Nations
Sense of amity and threat towards neighboring nations, awareness of neighboring nations, expectation of neighboring nations on the reunification of the Korean peninsula, and the need for cooperation with neighboring nations, etc.
In addition contents on changes in Korean society following liberation and attitude towards Korean society today are included.
