Abstract
This survey was conducted to establish a respite care service for family caregivers of the elderly with dementia to facilitate a more effective support system by reducing the emotional and financial burdens of family caregivers. A respite care service offers temporary relief for the primary caregiver from the burdens of caregiving by providing both physical and emotional protection for the elderly with dementia. For the development of such a service system the survey measured the level of stress suffered by the caregiving families of elderly with dementia and financial loss due to support activities.
The questionnaire of this survey is composed of characteristics of elderly with dementia, characteristics of primary caregivers, type of care for elderly with dementia, and the emotional and financial burden on the primary caregiver. Questions on the elderly with dementia include type of dementia, degree of impairment of cognitive skills, degree of problematic behavior, ability to conduct Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and ability to conduct Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL). Questions on the primary caregivers include state of health, involvement in financial activities, household income, subjective income sufficiency, and hours of caregiving. Questions on type of care for elderly with dementia include frequency and period of using care service, and the frequency of using additional welfare services, and questions on the burdens of the primary caregivers include level of stress, degree of depression symptoms, and expenditure on treatment and care.
