Abstract

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute conducted the「Survey on Cultural Enjoyment」to utilize data on the cultural leisure activities of Koreans for the establishment of the government’s cultural policies. The survey has been conducted every three years since it began in 1988 and biennially since 2006.
This data was collected in 1997 and the questionnaire is composed of seven areas including leisure activities, attending artistic events, visitation of historic sites, utilization of media, utilization of cultural facilities and cultural activities, education in culture and arts, and cultural policy. The questions included in each area are as follows.
Leisure Activities: Use of leisure time, leisure time, expenditure on leisure activities, desired leisure activity, constraints on leisure activities, etc.
Attending Artistic Events: Number of attendance per type of artistic event, channel of gathering information on artistic events, constraints on attending artistic events, main source of expenditure among cultural and artistic activities, cultural and artistic area of development, underdeveloped cultural and artistic area, etc.
Visitation of Historic Sites: Experience of visiting historic sites and level of satisfaction, points for improvement at historic sites, experience of visiting cultural historic site and level of satisfaction, etc.
Utilization of Media: News articles of Interest, location for listening to the radio, hours spent on watching TV, TV programs of choice, number of books read, main genre of reading, method of purchasing books, video program of choice, state of using computers and the internet, etc.
Utilization of Cultural Facilities and Cultural Activities: Number of visits per cultural facility and level of satisfaction, experience of attending cultural event and level of satisfaction and points for improvement, channel of gathering information on cultural activities, experience of volunteering for cultural events, membership in clubs, etc.
Education in Culture and Arts: experience of attending course on culture/arts, reason for attending, method of attending, level of satisfaction with course, and points for improvement, and course on culture/arts desired to attend, etc.
Cultural Policy: The level of Korean culture and arts, culture and arts policy of priority, priority facility for expansion, measures for supporting cultural activities, and culture related awareness, etc.
