Survey on Asian Women’s Marital Migration and Process of Settlement in Korea, 2007

Abstract

Between 1990 and 2006 the number of international marriages has drastically increased to more than 8 times. But the foreign born spouses who have migrated to Korea through international marriages are suffering from difficulties in adapting to their new environment from financial difficulties, unstable personal status, problems of social welfare benefits, and difficulties stemming from cultural prejudices and discrimination. This survey was conducted to examine the process of social capital formation and adjustment status of women who have immigrated to Korea through marriages. The survey was designed to allow an international comparative study of the diverse paths of settlement in marital migration by including Japanese female marital immigrants as representative cases of developed nations and Chinese and Vietnamese female marital immigrants as representative cases of developing nations.
The questionnaire of this survey includes contents on personal information, family relations, daily life and attitude, and financial status. Questions on personal information include, level of education, place of growing up, current nationality, ethnical identity, religion, and occupation. Questions on family relations include, point of marriage, number of marriages, number of children, reason for marriage, family’s reaction towards marriage, accuracy of information regarding husband, education level and occupation of parents, frequency of contact with family and friends in home country, and help from friends/relatives residing in Korea. Questions on daily life and attitude include, frequency of participation in social groups, number of acquaintances in Korea, occupation of acquaintances, self-efficacy, interpersonal trust, life satisfaction, attitude towards children, communication with family, family values, conflict resolution, and trusted acquaintance. Questions on financial conditions include monthly income, relative income level, and type of residence.
