The rate of aging of the Korean population is still lower than that of other developed countries but it is progressing faster than any other country and expected to reach the world’s highest level by 2040. Domestically, population aging is progressing quickest in larger city areas including Busan, Daegu, Incheon, and Ulsan, and the establishment of proactive welfare policies for the elderly in these areas has emerged as an important task.
The「Survey on the Elderly Welfare Conditions and Needs in Busan」was conducted to collect representative data on the living conditions of the elderly for the establishment of policy on the elderly in the Busan area among other metropolitan cities.
The contents of the survey is divided into general characteristics of the elderly and their daily lives, financial activities of the elderly, leisure and social activities of the elderly, and the health and support of the elderly.
Contents on the general characteristics and daily lives of the elderly include demographic characteristics of the elderly, state of health, whether living with children, state of support by children, family relations, and level of life satisfaction.
Contents on the financial activities of the elderly include source of income, amount of income, appropriate living costs, minimum living costs, state of employment, reason for employment/ unemployment, type of employment, level of job satisfaction, and expected age of retirement.
Contents on the leisure and social activities of the elderly include place of leisure, preferred location for leisure activities, leisure and social activities, and state of volunteer activities.
Lastly, contents on the health and state of support of the elderly includes state of health, prevalence of chronic illness, level of disability in everyday life, use of support services, level of satisfaction with family support, and the needs and difficulties faced by family caregivers.
