Abstract

The Korean society has experienced rapid economic growth and drastic social changes. As a result, generations that have experienced varying processes of socialization are in coexistence leading to continuing efforts to resolve social conflicts between them.
The National Youth Policy Institute has been conducting a research project for a period of three years with the goal of forecasting future patterns of change in Korean society through comparative analysis of value systems between the different generations. The「Survey on the Social Consciousness of Youth」is the second year survey of the research project and was conducted for the comparative analysis of the differences in social consciousness and social participation between the generations.
The main contents of the survey include level of interest in political and social problems, use of media, reliability of the media, self-esteem, psychological characteristics of authoritarianism, citizenship, attitude towards political doctrine (collectivism, materialism, egalitarianism), national identity, political efficacy, political and social participation, awareness of social issues, evaluation of level of national development, and level of satisfaction with social realities.
