Abstract

The National Youth Policy Institute is conducting the「Study on the Human Rights Level of Korean Youths in Comparison to International Standards」since 2006 to examine the human rights level of Korean youths and to establish a human rights environment that meet global standards through comparative studies of human rights environment of youths among different countries. The「Survey on the Lives and Attitudes of Youths」was conducted in 5 countries including Korea, Japan, China, the United States, and Sweden to collect data for the third year study. This data was collected from Korean youths and includes contents on the rights to live, the rights to protection, the rights to development, the rights to participation, and general rights.
- Rights to live: state of health and nutrition, level of safety from crime, experience of attempted suicide etc.
- Rights to protection: experience of physical abuse and financial exploitation, experience of discrimination in everyday life, experience of delinquency/deviation, experience of damages from delinquency/deviation etc.
- Rights to development: hours of study and attitude towards studying, counseling, content of counseling, relationship with parents, average hours spent on leisure and its utilization, self evaluation, attitude in school, membership and participation in youth organizations, schooling’s degree of contribution on future planning etc.
- Rights to participation: decision making power within the family, needs for student activities, attitude towards social participation of youths, experience of social participation, reflection of student opinion on school rules and management etc.
- General rights: attitude towards level of youths’ rights, recognition of policies on youths etc.
