Abstract

The Korea Labor Institute and Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs jointly conducted the Unemployment and Welfare Need Survey in Korea while the 1997 financial crisis produced extreme levels of unemployment and threatened the livelihood and employment chances of the people. The purpose of the Unemployment and Welfare Need Survey in Korea is to present policy that can effectively improve the government’s unemployment policy and service conditions by understanding the living conditions of the unemployed and their need for welfare. This survey was conducted among daily wage earners with experiences of job change following the IMF crisis. The questionnaire is composed of the following: current job situation, past job situation, channel of employment used to get current job, evaluation of government unemployment policy, and personal and familial state of being.
