Abstract

The Korea Labor Institute and Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs jointly conducted the Unemployment and Welfare Need Survey in Korea while the 1997 financial crisis produced extreme levels of unemployment and threatened the livelihood and employment chances of the people. The purpose of the Unemployment and Welfare Need Survey in Korea is to present policy that can effectively improve the government’s unemployment policy and service conditions by understanding the living conditions of the unemployed and their need for welfare. This survey was conducted among financially inactive household members. The questionnaire is composed of the following contents: reasons for not seeking a job, past job seeking status, government support in job seeking, preferred job, job situation before unemployment, evaluation of and desire for government unemployment policy, state of the unemployed and their families, and the evaluation of family welfare services and other government programs.
