Abstract
This dataset is a part of the documents collected by the May 18 Institute at Chonnam National University related to the democratic movement, centering upon the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, between 1960s and 2000. The documents were collected not only to promote scholarly research but also to contribute to the advancement of democracy and human rights in Korea. The Institute has collected a variety of qualitative data as public statements, pamphlets, meeting minutes, journal articles, monographs, photographs, and video files. Most documents came from the democratic movement activists and faculties affiliated with Chonnam National University as well as from the citizens of Gwangju.
This particular dataset contains data related to the Dong-A Freedom of the Press Movement, one of the leading democratic movements for the freedom of the press in the 1970s. The dataset consists of 6 articles composed by the workers at Dong-A Ilbo prior to the formation of the Committee for Freedom of the Press. The articles include: A white paper on the practice of free press(March 12); A petition by the Dong-A workers (March 14); Public statements on the Dong-A situation (March17, April 3); the daily records of the Dong-A situation between March 8 and April 2; and a bulletin of the Committee for the Freedom of the Press(June 14).
