Abstract

This dataset is a part of the documents collected by the May 18 Institute at Chonnam National University related to the democratic movement, centering upon the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, between 1960s and 2000. The documents were collected not only to promote scholarly research but also to contribute to the advancement of democracy and human rights in Korea. The Institute has collected a variety of qualitative data as public statements, pamphlets, meeting minutes, journal articles, monographs, photographs, and video files. Most documents came from the democratic movement activists and faculties affiliated with Chonnam National University as well as from the citizens of Gwangju.
This data is a collection of assembly fliers, slogans, petitions, and public statements from the time of the May 18 Gwangju Uprising. The data include a written resolution encouraging the citizens of Gwangju to participate in the movement, and public statements of personal opinions on the May 18 Gwangju Uprising by groups and their representatives such as the citizens of Gwangju, laborers, and catholic priests. It also includes petitions asking for help and relaying the conditions of the May 18 Gwangju Uprising to president Choi Kyu-hah, Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan, and other leaders as well as citizens, students, people of different religions, and the media.
