Abstract

This dataset is a part of the documents collected by the May 18 Institute at Chonnam National University related to the democratic movement, centering upon the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, between 1960s and 2000. The documents were collected not only to promote scholarly research but also to contribute to the advancement of democracy and human rights in Korea. The Institute has collected a variety of qualitative data as public statements, pamphlets, meeting minutes, journal articles, monographs, photographs, and video files. Most documents came from the democratic movement activists and faculties affiliated with Chonnam National University as well as from the citizens of Gwangju.
This data is a collection of public statements and petitions by organizations and individuals on the investigation into the truth behind the 5.18 Gwangju Democratization Movement written after the 1980s. This data mainly contains contents on establishing the May 18 Gwangju Uprising as a democratization movement and not a riot, as well as pressing for compensating the bereaved families of the May 18 Gwangju Uprising.
