Abstract

This dataset is a part of the documents collected by the May 18 Institute at Chonnam National University related to the democratic movement, centering upon the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, between 1960s and 2000. The documents were collected not only to promote scholarly research but also to contribute to the advancement of democracy and human rights in Korea. The Institute has collected a variety of qualitative data as public statements, pamphlets, meeting minutes, journal articles, monographs, photographs, and video files. Most documents came from the democratic movement activists and faculties affiliated with Chonnam National University as well as from the citizens of Gwangju.
This dataset contains the records of court statements made by those who were on trial for the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement. The statements contain the defendants' claims of innocence as well as their resentments and criticisms against the authorities for their deceptive handling of the May 18 events. Included are court statements of Myong No-Geun(faculty at Chonnam University) and Father Kim Seong-Yong who were appeared repeatedly in data related in the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement.
