Abstract

This dataset is a part of the documents collected by the May 18 Institute at Chonnam National University related to the democratic movement, centering upon the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, between 1960s and 2000. The documents were collected not only to promote scholarly research but also to contribute to the advancement of democracy and human rights in Korea. The Institute has collected a variety of qualitative data as public statements, pamphlets, meeting minutes, journal articles, monographs, photographs, and video files. Most documents came from the democratic movement activists and faculties affiliated with Chonnam National University as well as from the citizens of Gwangju.
This particular dataset includes 11 documents related to the events of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement. Half of the data are reports of the daily events and local casualities of the Gwangju Movement. The other half are records of the events between May 14 and May 27, 1980, sequentially organized by dates and times. In the collection can be found personal memos of the novelist Hwang Seok-Young, which later became important sources of 『Beyond Death, Beyond Dark Times』(1985).
