The purpose of this survey research is to clarify the concept of a middle class as the proponent of democratization and social change and to examine its view, from a socially and economically stable stance, of the changes in Korean society. This survey focuses on the lives of middle class Koreans in the 1980s with a closer look at life styles and living conditions, economic activities, identity, and attitudes towards society and politics of the average middle class. This study limited the criterion for middle class as those living in houses or apartments of 20 to 60 Pyeong in size. Among the manufacturing workers and service sector employees included in the total survey pool those with less than middle school education or a monthly income of less than 400,000 won were excluded from the middle class category. The same rules were applied to respondents who were housewives, retired, or unemployed.
