Abstract

The「Survey on the School Life and Behavioral Patterns of Youths」was conducted to gain a scientific understanding of the state of corporal punishment in schools and the attitudes of those who are a part the school. Fundamentally, corporal punishment has two aspects, one as violence and another as a measure of discipline. This survey will bring about an opportunity for new discussion on corporal punishment by examining the theory of the ‘inevitability of corporal punishment’ which emphasizes the educational effects of corporal punishment. The「Survey on the School Life and Behavioral Patterns of Youths」was conducted for the「Study on Corporal Punishment in School」and this data was collected from students attending middle and high schools in Seoul. The questionnaire includes contents on attitude towards law and regulations, school and family life, self-esteem, experience of corporal punishment, teachers’ attitudes towards corporal punishment, and deviant behavior.
