Abstract

This dataset is a part of the documents collected by the May 18 Institute at Chonnam National University related to the democratic movement, centering upon the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, between 1960s and 2000. The documents were collected not only to promote scholarly research but also to contribute to the advancement of democracy and human rights in Korea. The Institute has collected a variety of qualitative data as public statements, pamphlets, meeting minutes, journal articles, monographs, photographs, and video files. Most documents came from the democratic movement activists and faculties affiliated with Chonnam National University as well as from the citizens of Gwangju.
Collected in this dataset are 9 trial records related to the May 18 Movement such as written arraignment, notice of attorney appearance, receipt of trial records, etc. 5 of documents are related to the Noh Jun-Hyun case. A student at Chonnam National University and a participant of the Democratic Movement, Noh had been one of the leading student activists involved with movements against the Yushin Regime and struggles for college autonomy prior to the May 18 Movement. Noh was indicted on charges of instigating a rebellion. The dataset not only depicts the trial processes in detail but also highlights the personal struggles of Noh in depth.
