The unemployment rate which was at 2% in 1990 shot up to 6.8% in 1998 and to 8.6% in 1999, since then though the unemployment rate has gradually decreased, fears of job instability still exist and many families are suffering financially. This survey research takes a look at how the increase in unemployment and decrease in income following the IMF financial crisis has affected the families of Korean society through studying the financial activities of families, family relationships, patriarchy, mental well-being, and the dismantling of the family.
