이 조사는 아산정책연구원이 북한 김정일 위원장의 사망 직후 대북 및 안보 현안에 대한 국민여론을 파악하고자 시행한 것이다. 주요 조사내용은 정부의 대북정책 평가, 대북정책 추진방향, 대북지원에 대한 찬반, 한반도 전쟁가능성, 북한정권 붕괴가능성, 북한정권 붕괴가 남한에 미치는 영향, 정부조문단 파견에 대한 찬반, 남북관계 전망, 남북관계 발전에 필요한 협력국가, 중요 국가과제, 대통령 국정운영지지도, 정당지지도, 대선후보지지도 등이다.
