Abstract

The Busan Women and Family Development Institute, for the purpose of collecting preliminary data necessary for the establishment of Busan Metropolitan City's family policy implementation plan, conducted this survey to determine the types of households, family characteristics, family problems, and demand for policies on family in the Busan area.
Contents of the survey include type of household and characteristics of residence, characteristics of household members, financial status of household, family values, support of family and division of household chores, family relations, family problems, leisure activities, family health, and family policies. Specific survey questions are as follows.
1. Type of household and characteristics of residence: Number of household members, type of household, type of housing tenure, period of residence, plans to move, satisfaction with residence, etc.
2. Characteristics of household members: Gender and age of household members, level of education and occupation of household members, type of family, whether or not a double income family, etc.
3. Financial status of household: Subjective sate of household finances, average monthly household income and expenditure, average monthly expenditure by item, household debt, whether or not receiving public assistance, etc.
4. Family values: Images associated with family, perception of family and family relations, attitude towards marriage divorce and remarriage, ideal number of children, attitude toward children, attitude toward supporting parents, etc.
5. Supporting family and division of household chores: Plans for childbirth, childcare institution, hours of childcare, and childcare costs, difficulties in raising children, household member requiring care and main caregiver, difficulties in providing care, intention of utilizing nursing home or day care center, and division of labor between husband and wife, etc.
6. Family relations: Satisfaction with spouse, hours of conversation with spouse, decision maker for each important issue, frequency of contact with parents, etc.
7. Family problems: Experience of considering divorce, frequency of experiencing conflict between husband and wife by type of cause leading to conflict, experience of domestic violence, experience of receiving counseling regarding family problems and the counseling agency, family problem one wishes to receive counseling for, etc.
8. Leisure activities: Frequency of family meals, hours family spends together, main leisure activity, obstacles in participating in leisure activities, intention of participating in volunteer activities, desired area of volunteer activity, etc.
9. Family health: Subjective state of health, method of managing health, household member with chronic illness and main caregiver, type of chronic illness and cost of treatment, etc.
10. Family policy: Standard of living in Busan, level of awareness of major projects conducted, desired family support program, degree of helpfulness of major family policies and priority in implementing given policies, most necessary work-family balance assistance system, areas for improvement related to childcare, etc.
