Abstract
The「KBS Time Use Survey」is a periodic survey jointly conducted by the KBS Broadcast Research Institute and the Institute of Communication Research at Seoul National University to produce data on time use. The survey, first conducted in 1981 was conducted every two years until 1990 when it was changed to every five years.
The data collected through this survey is being utilized not only for academic research on leisure and media but also for establishing national policies and corporate strategies. And the accumulated time series data is also being used in understanding the patterns of change in Korean society. Furthermore, KBS and NHK broadcasting stations established a cooperative system where identical surveys were designed and conducted simultaneously to allow the data to be utilized in comparative studies of the two countries.
The survey was conducted by having the respondent complete a time diary for three days from Saturday to Monday. The time diary is designed to record the all activities of the respondent in 15 minute time frames. The specific activities of the respondent is entered into the data after being classified according to previously developed behavioral categories. This data was collected in 2010 and includes all activities conducted over the course of time classified into 45 categories such as sleep, meals, miscellaneous errands, work, study, household chores, fellowship, recreation, movement, leisure activities, use of media.
