The 「Seoul Panel Study of Children」 is a research survey being conducted from 2004 until 2011 to collect longitudinal data on the socio-emotional development and academic achievements, daily life and health, as well as family environment and household characteristics of children living in poverty to determine the impact of poverty on the development of children from a viewpoint based on the various stages of life. This survey is being conducted annually since 2004 among the fourth grade students attending elementary school and their parents as paired panels.
This data was collected in 2006 from the third wave of the survey and the questionnaires were separately designed for the children and for the parents. The questionnaire for the children was composed of questions on self identity and emotions, school life, relationship with parents, daily life and health, and the questionnaire for the parents was composed of questions on health of children, education of children, family environment, and household characteristics. The main questions of the survey are as follows.
1. Questionnaire for children
1) Self identity and emotions: self-esteem, depression, anxiety, withdrawal, attention, propensity for aggression, disposition to delinquency, burden due to family, expected level of education, awareness of the importance of education, etc.
2) School life: psychological school environment, attitude toward learning, bond with teacher, school grades, peer relations, and experience of deviation and delinquency, etc.
3) Relationship with parents: experience of abuse, bond with parents, pressure from parents regarding studies, etc.
4) Daily life and health: experience of skipping meals, state of health, height and weight, counselor, number of hours spent on watching TV, number of hours spent on using the internet, number of hours spent on household chores, activities after returning home from school, experience of working a part-time job, experience of receiving public assistance, etc.
2. Questionnaire for parents
1) Children's health: state of health at birth, current state of health, disability/illness, etc.
2) Children's education: school grades, parent participation in education, expenses on private education, household learning environment, interest in children, and method of conversing with children, etc.
3) Family environment: Emotional state of parents, smoking and drinking habits of parents, experience of domestic violence, and relationship among family members, etc.
4) Household characteristics: members of the family living together, marital status of parents, level of education and working conditions of parents, type of residence, household income and expenditure, experience of a shortage in money for household expenditures, residential environment and social cohesiveness, social support by parents, helper in raising children, and experience of receiving public assistance, etc.
