Abstract

The Korea Institute of Criminology conducted this survey to collect data on homicide including the characteristics of the criminal act, the criminal, as well as the victim, for the purpose of gaining a systematic understanding of the various aspects of homicide. This survey was conducted by carrying out, in parallel, a record survey of administrative data of prison inmates and a survey of the inmates included in the record survey.
This data is composed of contents collected through the record survey including the general characteristics of criminal act, general characteristics of criminal, general characteristics of the victim, and the psychological characteristics of the criminal collected from the survey of the inmates. Specific details of the survey are as follows:
1. General Characteristics of Criminal Act
The charge, number of accomplices, number of victims, final verdict, place of crime, date and time of crime, method of murder, method of disposing of the corps, method of restraining victim, motive for murder, murder weapon, cause of death, consumption of alcohol or drugs, etc.
2. General Characteristics of Criminal
Gender, age, residence, type of residence, level of education, marital status, occupation, standard of living, whether suffering from physical disability or mental illness, relationship with parents, primary caregiver, family relationship, experience of abuse, history of crime, results of MMPI personality test and correctional psychology test, etc.
3. General Characteristics of Victim
Gender, age, marital status, occupation, whether suffering from a physical disability or mental illness, relationship to offender, whether there was conflict between the victim and the offender and the reason for conflict, whether there were acts of violence and abuse between the victim and the offender, etc.
4. Psychological Characteristics of Criminal
Childhood family and school life and experience of deviation and abuse, psychological state prior to crime, self-esteem, self-control, interpersonal relations, aggression, anger, hostility, etc.
