Abstract

This survey was conducted by the Korean Institute of Criminology to examine the state of domestic application of the CPTED technique and its effectiveness in suppressing crime, for the purpose of providing institutional implementation measures for the technique of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) being adopted by major developed countries. The survey was conducted individually among police officers, administrative officers, and inmates, and this data was collected from Inmates.
The main contents of the survey include, factors for consideration in choosing targets of crime, preferred season, weather, and day of the week in committing crime, motives for crime, details of crime, existence of an accomplice, time period of crime, place of crime, reason for choosing certain place for committing crime, method of breaking in, time required in committing crime, gender and age of victim, body type of victim, victim’s state of behavior at the time of crime, relationship to victim, recognition of scene of crime, geographical and environmental characteristics of the crime scene, state of security and crime prevention at the scene of crime, effects of alarms and CCTV in deterring crime, process of arrest, and deterrents of repeated offense.
