Abstract
The Korean Institute of Criminology conducted the survey to examine the occurrence and perception of workplace theft or employee theft which represent the “employee’s deviant behavior causing damages or losses to the place of employment”. This data, collected from workers of main occupations, is composed of four categories of workplace theft including loss of time, material damages, financial damages, and disclosure of information along with personal and organizational backgrounds.
The major contents of the survey include type of occupation, position, employment status, number of years worked, assessment of workplace system, relationship with coworkers and superiors, dissatisfaction with wage, dissatisfaction with promotion, dissatisfaction with duty, perception of workplace theft, experience of having committed workplace theft, and experience of witnessing workplace theft. Details of specific behaviors for each type of workplace theft are as follows.
1. Time
Smoking and chattering, personal phone calls, extension of lunch hour without notice, absence using excuses such as feigning illness, lateness due to various reasons such as traffic, leaving the office during working hours on personal business, playing online games and trading stocks during working hours.
2. Material
Personal use of office supplies, unauthorized transfer/use of goods from the workplace, unauthorized acquisition of goods produced/sold by the company.
3. Monetary
Personal use of corporate credit card, acceptance of rebates and briery, embezzlement and misappropriation of funds, intentional manipulation of financial records/account books and embezzlement, wrongful acquisition of overtime allowance.
4. Information Disclosure
Leaking of confidential corporate information to competitors, leaking of information to cooperative firms, wrongful acquisition of profit using internal information.
