Abstract

The total fertility rate of the Daegu area in 2006 was 1.00 (the national average was 1.13) the third lowest rate following Seoul and Busan. A survey using structured questionnaire and a depth interview were simultaneously conducted among the citizens of Daegu to collect preliminary data to analyze the causes and measures to solve low birthrate problem. This data was collected through the survey and includes contents on attitude towards marriage and childbirth, evaluation of childbirth policies, and the state of childbirth and family life.
The questionnaire of this survey is composed of questions that are applicable to both married and unmarried subjects and questions only applicable to married subjects. Common questions include attitude towards marriage, necessity of having a child, male preference, elements for consideration when giving birth, attitude towards premarital pregnancy, compatibility of work and family, optimal number of children, attitude towards the problems of low birthrate, awareness of maternity support project and its utilization, evaluation of the effects of childbirth policies.
Questions for married subjects include current number of children, experience of abortion, future plans for having more children, member responsible for household chores within the family, state of sharing housework with husband, difficulties in working and maintaining a family at the same time, and contemplating resignation due to childrearing.
