Abstract

The Panel Survey on the Employment of the Disabled is an annual project jointly conducted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled since 2008 to collect longitudinal data to track the working life of the disabled. This survey, which includes identical repeating questions, is conducted each year among a panel of registered disabled persons who were between the age of 15 and 75 in 2008.
This data was collected in 2009 and the questionnaire is composed of questions on individuals and households, status of disability, economic activity, vocational skills, utilization of employment services, development of vocational skills, quality of life, and women and the elderly. Specific questions are as follows.
1. Contents on Individuals and Households
Gender, age, level of education, marital status, earned income, private transfer income, household composition, characteristics of household members, household income, household expenditure, assets, and type of residence, etc.
2. Contents on Status of Disability
Type of disability, level of disability, period during which disability occurred, cause of disability, state of progression of disability, job change following the occurrence of disability, Activities of Daily Living, etc.
3. Contents on Economic Activity
Whether or not one is participating in economic activities, employment status, work experience, characteristics of job and labor conditions as well as work satisfaction of those who are employed, experience of employment, reason for unemployment and status of job seeking activities of those who are unemployed, etc.
4. Contents on Vocational Skills
Qualifications and certifications, state of obtaining certifications, helpfulness of certifications in gaining employment, job performance, area of expertise, and future plans, etc.
5. Contents on Employment Services
Experience of utilizing employment services (type of service, number of times and period of utilizing services, agency providing the service, channel of utilization, level of participation, helpfulness in gaining employment, difficulties in using services), reason for not utilizing employment services, and desired employment service, etc.
6. Contents on the Development of Vocational Skills
Experience of vocational training at a formal educational institution, experience of vocational training at a vocational training agency, experience of working a part time job, reason for not participating in vocational training, and desired area of vocational training, etc.
7. Contents on the Quality of Life
State of health, illness, number of hours spent on exercise and sleep, care provider, type of care received and number of hours, main mode of transportation, inconveniences in daily life, main daily activities, main leisure activity, life satisfaction, a sense of class belonging, etc.
8. Contents on Women and the Elderly
Experience of marriage and childbirth, number of children given birth to, job changes due to pregnancy/childbirth/child rearing, difficulties in child rearing, division of household labor within the family, number of hours spent on household chores, burdensomeness of household chores, reason for retiring, life satisfaction following retirement, and preparation for old age, etc.
