Abstract

During the 1998 IMF bailout in Korea the number of unemployed rose dramatically due to corporate restructuring resulting from the economic downturn. Thus the Korean Labor Institute conducted this survey to collect data to be utilized in the decision making process of extending the coverage of unemployment insurance to those currently excluded such as temporary and hourly workers and businesses with less than four employees to stabilize the employment and secure the livelihood of the unemployed.
The survey was conducted among companies, full time workers, temporary workers, and hourly workers and this data was collected from companies. The questionnaire includes contents on switch in employment type, number of employees and their responsibilities by employment type, level of wage and working hours by employment type, employment period specified in a contract, state of job training by employment type, and the need for extending coverage of unemployment insurance.
