Abstract

This is the in-depth interview data collected among teachers from elementary schools in the Busan Metropolitan City on their perceptions and attitudes towards teacher evaluation. This interview was conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of elementary school teachers’ attitudes towards teacher evaluation and to analyze the relationship between the structural and cultural characteristics of a school and perception towards teacher evaluation.
The targets of the interviews were from 12 elementary schools in the Busan Metropolitan City area including 6 principals, 5 assistant-principals, 7 headmasters, and 12 teachers, and the interviews were conducted using semi-structured questionnaires. The main contents of the interview includes arguments for and against the introduction of a teacher evaluation system, purpose and reason for teacher evaluation, overall attitude towards a teacher evaluation system such as prerequisites for the introduction of a teacher evaluation system, contents of evaluation, evaluator, method of evaluation, opinion on details of the evaluation process such as the time and number of evaluations, attitude toward methods of utilizing the results of the evaluation as well as its exposure, perception towards the effects of evaluation, and issues to be emphasized in relation to teacher evaluations.
