The 「Jeju Island Academic Research」 is a large scale academic research conducted from July to August of 1959 for a comprehensive research of Jeju Island under the criticism that past research surveys as well as studies for facility planning have been unable to produce any results. The survey was conducted by a research group divided into 15 parts from the areas of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences surveying Jeju Island's language, folk customs, history, society, economy, population and natural environment.
This data is the social area field survey notes from South Jeju-gun's Jungmun-myeon Weolpyung-ri and Pyoseon-myeon Tosan-ri as well as North Jeju-gun's Gujwa-myeon Dongbok-ri and the <Jeju Island Academic Research Group Agenda>. The field notes include contents on the survey areas' location and class relations, economic status, method of distribution of inheritance and ancestral rites, religion and special customs of Jeju Island such as Sahon(死婚) or Jaewoljeon(祭鉞田). The <Jeju Island Academic Research Group Agenda> includes the questionnaire, methods of research activity, research survey questions for each part, organizational chart of the research group and member list, agenda, and expected research activities.
