The DMZ is a valuable source for eco-tourism as it is the only area in the world inhabited by rare plants and animals. Thus the DMZ has not only captivated the interest of scholars worldwide, but its value has been recognized by domestic and international institutions including the United Nations. This survey research was conducted to evaluate the economic value of the DMZ as a source for eco-tourism. The data was analyzed by first computing the amount individuals are willing to donate to the conservation fund and based on that amount estimating the conservation value of the DMZ.
This survey data was collected separately from Korean and Japanese tourists to allow comparative analysis between nationals and foreigners. The questionnaire includes questions on DMZ awareness, preferred type of tourism, attitude towards the environment, intention of donating to the conservation fund and amount willing to donate, and reason for unwillingness to donate, etc.
