Abstract

With the recent increase in social interest, the number of children’s libraries has drastically increased. Since the main users of children’s libraries are children and their parents the spatial structure and facilities should be differently organized in comparison to average libraries. In this respect, the need for a study arises on how to organize the space of children’s libraries in order to more efficiently utilize and manage the library. The「Study on the Spatial Planning for Children’s Libraries」was conducted to investigate the elements influencing the use and management of children’s libraries and for this purpose three user surveys were simultaneously conducted including behavior mapping, tracking studies, and an opinion poll.
The「Survey on the Use of Children’s Libraries」was conducted to gather feedback on the state of utilization and opinion on the library space by the users of children’s libraries. The questionnaire of this survey is composed of manner of using library, evaluation of the ease of use, and evaluation of the spatial structure of the library. The questions on the manner of using libraries include, day of the week visited, hours of use, transportation used in getting to library, and time it takes to get to library. Questions on the evaluation of the ease of use includes ease of conducting book search, features to induce interest, features for safety and child protection, and emotional safety. Questions on evaluation of spatial structure of library include size, location, internal mobility, level of noise, level of interior decoration, and whether space for guardians exist.
