Abstract

A majority of inmates experience either a weakening of family relationships or the dismantling of the family altogether. Under the indifference of society some families of inmates are exposed to poverty or problems of childrearing. Family problems of inmates can act as an impediment to adjusting to prison life as well as become a cause of correctional problems. Thus it is necessary to establish measures not only for inmates but also policies to support families of inmates to aid in providing a stable prison life for inmates.
The「Survey on Family Relationships of Inmates」was conducted to provide practical information for the establishment of inmate support policies by investigating the state of family relationships of inmates. The survey was conducted separately among inmates and families of inmates and this data was collected from inmates. The questionnaire includes contents on reason for imprisonment, closeness to family, children related information, use of visitation programs and support system.
