Abstract

One of the main issues of the recent police reform is whether or not the activities of the police are suitable to the needs of the local communities. But the current evaluation of police reform by academics tends to center mostly around issues of the police such as the democracy of the police organization, professionalization, political independence, and crime prevention. The「Survey on Police Activities, Public Security and Crime Prevention in Korea」 was conducted to promote the study of police activities in local communities recently being introduced by the Korean police, and to collect preliminary data for the establishment of a desirable relationship between the police and local communities. The questionnaire includes contents on degree of life satisfaction, exposure to crime, fear of crime victimization, experience of crime victimization, measures of crime prevention, social relationships, surrounding environment, voluntary crime prevention activities, public security activities by the police, police activities in the community, and unmanned security system.
