Abstract
The rapid economic growth of the East Asian countries of Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, termed “the four dragons”, have rapidly changed the social and economic structure of each society. Among these countries Korea and Taiwan have experienced contrasting economic development models where Korea underwent a Chaebol centered centralized development, Taiwan on the other hand experienced its growth through the growth of small and medium businesses. These two different development models had varying effects on labor relations, labor movement, and the structure of the labor market. In Korea an internal labor market slowly developed after 1987 whereas Taiwan has formed a labor market closely resembling a free market economy model.
The purpose of this research survey is to systematically compare the degree of Taiwan’s labor market’s segmentation, the effects of human capital on the income and mobility of laborers, investigation of laborers’ frequency of job change and the structure of job mobility, the level of occupational and job satisfaction and dedication, and the systematic comparison of the internal labor market’s degree of development. This data not only contains information on the details of employment conditions such as industry, occupation, employed position, working hours, job safety, and promotion possibilities, but also offers dynamic information on labor mobility by repetitively measuring occupational characteristics. Furthermore, it includes information on the division of household labor, marital relations, decision making, and sexuality.
