Abstract

Although the official "crime statistics" reported by the crime analysis division of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office allows for an overall understanding of the state of crime, due to the existence of numerous unreported hidden crimes it has been criticized as insufficient in demonstrating accurate levels of crime victimization and development. This survey was conducted by investigating the criminal victimization experienced by the citizens of Seoul during the year 1990 and to collect data useful for establishing effective countermeasures under the understanding that without a clear look at the current state, finding effective preventive measures will not be possible. The questionnaire includes contents on experience of crime such as auto theft, theft of auto parts, household theft, household burglary, individual burglary, individual theft, acts of violence, and sexual violence, state of victimization, whether the crime was reported, level of satisfaction with the police’s handling of the situation, and reason for not reporting.
