Prisons exist for the purpose of correcting and helping criminals adjust to society after they have returned. But the increasing level of crime and repeated offenses are questioning the competence of Korea’s prison facilities. This survey was conducted to examine the daily lives and value systems of inmates, under the assumption that in order to evaluate if prison facilities are being run suitably carrying out their purposes of punishment and correction that it is necessary to first understand the thoughts and lives of the inmates. In particular, this survey focused closely on the unofficial groups among inmates as well as relations with each other and interaction with prison officers. The questionnaire included contents on socio-demographic characteristics and financial status previous to imprisonment, prison life, view on life, value system, relations with prison officers, and reason for imprisonment.
