Although shoplifting by youths takes up a large portion of a shop’s total sales it has never been the subject of empirical studies. Since there is no understanding of the scale of damages due to shoplifting it is unlikely that systematic measures have been discussed. This survey was conducted to collect preliminary data necessary for establishing systematic preventive measures by examining the state and cause of shoplifting. The questionnaire includes contents on attitude towards and perception of shoplifting, experience of shoplifting, and personal conditions.
