Abstract

The financial damages caused by automobile theft are relatively large compared to other types of theft and due to the possibility of its use in other crimes effective countermeasures are necessary. This survey was conducted to establish preventive measures for automobile theft currently on the rise in Korea by collecting detailed data from prisoners with experiences of automobile theft. The questionnaire includes contents on criminal record, experience of automobile theft, title of crime, accomplice, relations to organized crime, circumstances at the time of automobile theft, state of stolen automobile, purpose of stealing automobile, elements for consideration in deciding target of theft, use of stolen automobile in criminal activities, disposal of stolen automobile, police search evasion tactics, circumstances at the time of arrest, final sentence, and personal profiles of victims.
