Abstract

Although continuous criticism arises that due to the insufficiency of public security in assuaging the fear of crime victimization in everyday life the use of private security services are on the rise, empirical studies on the subject are nonexistent. The「Survey on Crime Awareness and the Use of Private Security Services」was conducted to investigate the state of the rapidly growing private security services in Korea and to build a preliminary database useful for the establishment of policy measures to reduce the fear of crime. The survey was conducted among small business owners with less than 20 employees and average citizens, and this survey is of small business owners. The questionnaire includes contents on, level of danger in surrounding area, fear of crime victimization, level of exposure to crime victimization, ability to cope with crime, crime prevention measures at business site, experience of crime prevention activities, damage to business caused by crime, contents on sales activities, surrounding environment of business site, and topics related to security services.
