Chung, Jinsoo / Korean Institute of Criminology
In 2001 the number of pretrial detainees in Korea exceeds 40% of the total number of inmates held in facilities. Unlike the inmates who have already been sentenced the principle of presumed innocence is applied to the pretrial detainees and the issue of their treatment and human rights is just as important as that of the other inmates. However, previous studies have focused mostly on inmates alone. The「Survey on the Treatment of Pretrial Detainees」 aims to examine the treatment conditions of pretrial detainees and administrative problems and collect preliminary data useful for establishing improvement measures. The questionnaire is composed of contents on detention facility, hygiene, daily routine, meals, exercise/sports/leisure, and medical care.
