Abstract
In January 6, 1999 the National Assembly passed the Teacher’s Union Law and the Korean Teachers and Education Workers' Union (KTU) was launched as a legitimate organization. The「Public Opinion Survey of Elementary, Middle, and High School Teachers on the Current Issues in Education」was conducted ahead of the legitimate launch of the union by the Gwangju branch of the KTU to explore policy for educational reform and measures for the augmentation of teachers’ authority.
This survey was conducted among elementary, middle, and high school teachers of the Gwangju area and the questionnaire includes current issues in education and challenges, evaluation of the government’s education reform, satisfaction with being a teacher, intention of recommending teaching as a vocation to his or her children, state of character building education of children, need for corporal punishment, contribution of KTU to educational reform, priorities of the KTU, status of KTU membership, pros and cons of launching the KTU, and the state of school management at the school of one’s employment.
