Abstract

The Korean Institute for Youth Development decided to conduct an international comparative survey of youths from Korea, Japan, Germany, Sweden, and the United States during four years from 2006 to 2009 on the topics of family, school, peer group, local community, and the process of socialization through the media. The yearly topics are as follows:

-2006: The Process of Socialization during Adolescence through Family
-2007: The Process of Socialization during Adolescence through School and Peer Groups
-2008: The Process of Socialization during Adolescence through Local Community and the Media
-2009: Formulation of Theory on the Process of Socialization during Adolescence and the Study of the Socialization Process Model (Integration of surveys from the 4 years)

The 2006 survey aims to investigate the process of socialization experienced by adolescents in the family and understand the changing concept of socialization to explore policy alternatives. The questionnaire is composed of contents including family structure and culture, the structure and attitude towards division of household chores, parent child relationship, parents’ childrearing methods, communication methods between parents and children, attitude towards gender roles and self identity, future planning, self-sustenance and independence, and social skills.
