Abstract

The「EAI-Hankook Ilbo Survey on the Ideologies of Koreans」has been conducted annually since May 2002 by the East Asian Institute and Hankook Ilbo to gain a positive understanding of the ideological standards largely accepted in Korean society and to examine the effect of social change on the changes in ideological distribution. This data was collected through the third year survey of the「EAI-Hankook Ilbo Survey on the Ideologies of Koreans」.

Ideology is an essential concept in understanding the overall domestic politics, economy, society, and culture. Although ideology refers to a relatively stable and firm disposition of values, its contents are innovated and renewed with the passage of time and changes in reality, rather than being fixed. The more social and economic changes a society goes through people’s ideological inclinations are more variable. Thus, a study on the ideologies of Korean society is impossible through a onetime study and can only be properly conducted through periodic and continual work.

The East Asia Institute selected 10 core issues that represent ideological conflicts from political, economic, social, and foreign affairs and national security areas and has traced the channel of ideological change and its causes with the passing of time. In order to trace the changes in ideological distribution in Korea and allow for comparative study with the past the 2004 survey questionnaire includes a majority of the content of the surveys done in 2002 and 2003.
