Abstract

The Korean National Youth Survey has been conducted every 2 years since 1998, and annually since 2002 among elementary, middle, and high school students under the belief that "In order to resolve adolescent problems it is necessary to first understand them". The purpose of this survey is to collect data that may be useful in understanding the lives of youths, such as how they are living, what problems they face at school and at home, and what problems they face with their parents and teachers. The Korean Social Survey Institute (the former Gwangju Social Survey Institute) planned the Korean National Youth Survey in 1996 and set up a model through surveying Gwangju in 1998 and 2000. In 2002 a framework was made to allow the study of adolescents from all district levels from large cities to eup and myeons by including middle sized cities, eup, and myeons of Jeolla Province. This framework made it possible to expand the survey range to include all of Korea allowing a comprehensive study of Korean youths.
