Abstract

The「EAI-JoongAng Daily Survey on South Korea-US Relations」was conducted annually from 2002 to 2004 by the East Asia Institute and JoongAng Daily to examine the changes in Korean People’s attitudes towards America. At a time when cooperation is becoming more critical due to the North Korean Nuclear Crisis, externally the US is unilaterally pursuing the curtailment and relocation of US armed forces in Korea as part of the US’s defense conversion policy, and internally a sense of sovereignty is growing in pursuit of the conversion of the South Korea-US alliance into a partnership more befitting to Korea’s economic growth and development. The survey aims to provide preliminary data for the establishment of a constructive South Korea-US relationship by examining Korean people’s attitude towards politics and the US. This data was collected through the second year survey. The questionnaire includes questions on evaluation of governance, SOFA, US armed forces in Korea, anti-American sentiments, the Bush administration’s North Korea policy, dispatching troops to Iraq, South Korea-US Summit, strengthening of South Korea-US alliance, teachers’ labor union, and ideological disposition.
