Abstract
Korea is currently experiencing an expansion of the ideological landscape through the influences of democratization and generational transition. The East Asia Institute is conducting a yearly survey on ideology since June of 2002 for an in depth study of the changing ideological landscape. The survey has two purposes. The first is to objectively understand the standards and contents of the ideology of Korean society. Second it is to grasp what changes and differences are brought on by the changes in social realities on ideological distribution. The more social and economic changes a society goes through people’s ideological tendencies are more variable. Thus, it means that finding the characteristics and significance of Korean society’s ideology is impossible through a one time study. The East Asia Institute has selected 10 core issues that represent ideological conflicts from political, economic, social, and diplomatic security areas and has followed the route of ideological change and its causes with the passing of time. For this purpose large parts of past questionnaires were utilized. The questionnaire is composed of contents including South-North relations, North Korean aid, Reunification, welfare policy, gender equality, party identification, voting, political attitude, and value systems.
