Lee, Nae Young / East Asia Institute
The presidential election in Korea is a pivotal moment determining the countries direction for the next 5 years. The analysis of votes from a presidential election demonstrates the structure of conflict and public sentiment for the next 5 years. The East Asia Institute conducted a public opinion survey during the presidential election not for the simple prediction of the election outcome but for the purpose of envisioning the future of Korea and forecasting sociopolitical conflicts and dilemmas to examine possible countermeasures. The survey was conducted prior to the unified candidacy and includes questions on forecasting the winner in scenarios of Lee Hoi-chang versus Chung Mong-Joon, Lee Hoi-chang versus Roh Moo-hyun, and the average citizen’s ideological evaluation of each candidate.
